Why I Write

On the strange compulsion to turn thoughts into words and put them somewhere other people can find them.

Why I Write

I don't write because I have answers. I write because writing is how I find out what I think.

There's a moment in every piece — usually about three paragraphs in — where the thing I set out to say gets replaced by something I didn't know I believed. That's the moment that makes it worthwhile.

Writing is thinking made visible. Sometimes what becomes visible surprises even the writer.

The real reason

Most people assume writers write to be read. That's part of it, sure. But the deeper reason is that the act of writing itself changes you. You start with a vague feeling and end with a thought you can hold up and examine.

It's like photography — you don't take photos to have photos. You take photos because the act of looking through a lens changes how you see.

The practice

I write every day. Not always well. Not always about anything important. But every day, something goes from my head onto a page. Some days it's three sentences. Some days it's three thousand words.

The quality varies. The practice doesn't.

That's the secret nobody tells you about creative work — consistency beats talent, every single time.
